Spectacular Spectacles!

30 Jun

“The spectacles of experience; through them you will see clearly a second time. ”   – Henrik Ibsen

Glasses have become super trendy lately.  Nerds, cataract sufferers and the legally blind are probably rejoicing to be considered cool, chic, and a bit hipster-y.

Grace Kelly made her glasses look fresh and sexy. But her specs weren't just an accesory, she was severely nearsighted.

These folks below are rocking the “nerd-frame” trend.  A few years ago, these frames might have been made fun of.  Now they are cool!  I wonder who started this trend?  Maybe, Ashton?  Did he break-up with his Trucker Hat and re-bound with nerd goggles?  Behold the Bieber, wearing a combo of a tough leather jacket (another trend-y trend) and goofy spectacles.  Bieber is such a contradiction!

I have to say, I like the new glasses trend.  It makes the burden of vision correction fun and creative instead of plain-Jane/Johnish and unfashionable.  While I don’t care for the oversized nerd-alert glasses, I do like some of the fun and creative frames that are more readily available now.  I am nearsighted and wear glasses to drive(most of the time, errr, watch out!), to the movies, star-gazing, etc.  I found the coolest company called Warby Parker.  I saw them featured on Sunday Morning but they’ve already been recognized by Vogue and GQ magazines.  They sell cool, unique frames for only $95, including the RX!  The website even has a feature that lets you upload a picture of yourself and “virtually” try on their frames.  My FAVORITE part is for every pair of glasses Warby Parker sells, they GIVE a pair to someone in need by partnering with non-profits like RestoringVision.org.  Love it!

I like these two styles:

Colton Frames

Zagg Frames

Each type of frame comes in a variety of colors and they even have a monocle for sale!  Awesome.  Free shipping, home try-ons and returns all for $95 AND they support charities.  A spectacular spectacle business!

Kale! Nom Nom

Kale the Superfood!

I made “Kale Chips” today!  I’ve meant to try this recipe for a few months now after I saw them made on Ellen.  Turns out, they are REALLY good!  They don’t taste like Lays potato chips but they sure give them a run for their money!

Now, when the Kale chips come out of the oven, they are very ominous looking.  Like someone singed your lunch salad.  But they are SO good!  Truly, I am impressed.  Give it a try!  They are great if you are a “mindless snacker” like me.  You can eat a lot of these and not consume too many calories.  AND Kale is a Superfood!  So, think of all the antioxidants and vitamins you will be ingesting!  Nom nom!

Kale Chips

Ingredients

1 good-size bunch of curly kale

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Sea salt or kosher salt to taste

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper (for easier cleanup).

Cut the thick stems from the kale leaves, and tear the leaves into chip-size pieces. Wash leaves and thoroughly dry with a salad spinner, or use paper towels instead. In a bowl or on the baking sheet, drizzle kale with olive oil and lemon juice and toss together with hands to distribute evenly. Sprinkle lightly or to taste with salt.

Place leaves on the baking sheet in a single layer. Bake until the edges are brown and the kale is crispy, about 15 to 20 minutes.

P.S.: You can vary the flavor in several ways. Use Greek or Cajun seasoning mixes in lieu of the salt, for example. Substitute sherry or another vinegar for the lemon juice. I’ve also seen grated Parmesan cheese sprinkled over before roasting.

* Note:  I squeezed too much lemon juice on my first batch and they were mighty tart.  Also, I felt I had too many so I threw the rest on my homemade pizza.  Delicious!

Can you see the dark green kale? I also added olive oil, yellow peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, and shredded cheese on a pre-made whole wheat Boboli pizza crust.

Carmageddon!

27 Jun

If you live in Los Angeles, I’m sure you’ve heard that . . . the 405 will be closed for 53 hours in July!

YES!  One of the nation’s busiest freeways, which carries 281,000 cars per day, the 405, will be completely shut down in both directions between the 101 and 10 freeways — a notoriously congested 10-mile stretch — beginning the night of Friday, July 15 and ending 5 a.m. the following Monday morning.

Dubbed Carmegeddon by KNX news radio, L.A. residents are expecting the mother of all traffic jams, apocalyptic traffic mayhem.  Closing a major vein of the city just might give L.A. an aneurysm.   Alternative routes are assuming to be extremely packed.  Sepulveda Boulevard (the 405’s surface street equivalent) will be backed up like early 1900s plumbing and the long and winding canyon roads will be a scary, cramped nightmare ( lots of steep cliffs) especially if someone gets road rage . . .

Well, L.A. will get a warm-up of royal pain-in-the-ass traffic when William and Kate visit our fine city from July 8th to July 10th.

Cheers!

CalTrans is warning people to stay away from the Westside and L.A. in general on the 16th and 17th.  Some good news: The Red Line subway from the Valley to Hollywood will be free of charge that weekend.  Metro buses will still charge, though.  Lame-O!

It’s not that big of a deal to me.  I don’t have any travel plans for that weekend.  I’m planning on staying in my hood’ in the valley for those two days.  I work Saturdays and luckily, it’s only 1 mile from my apartment.  I do feel bad for tourists/visitors who have already planned their L.A. trips ages ago and are just finding this news a little over a month before.  Thanks, CalTrans!  The usual hour-long commute between attractions, will turn into insane traffic for mid-July visitors for their entire weekend stay.  And The Getty Center, one of the city’s biggest draws, and one of my favorite places, is out of the question completely.  It sits right on the 405.

Funding for Metamorphosis

23 Jun

Hello!  I am helping my friend Dave Yohe fundraise for his thriller/horror film Metamorphosis.  Inspired by Franz Kafka’s literary classic “The Metamorphosis,”  the story addresses social issues like acceptance, consequences and in the end will make you question your true fears.   Dave’s goal is to create an entertaining film and wants his audience to absorb the message as they see fit.

Check out http://www.metamorphosismovie.com/ to see how cool it’s going to be!  He’s going to have a lot of great special effects!  Dave is a very passionate film maker and wants his film to look its best.  Give if you can, $5 makes a huge difference!!  Thank you!  We appreciate it so much!

“Cool means being able to hang with yourself.  All you have to ask yourself is ‘Is there anybody I’m afraid of? Is there anybody who if I walked into a room and saw, I’d get nervous?’  If not, then you’re cool.”
